You asked me your top hairstylist questions on Instagram and I'm answering.. From hair school, to products, to life behind the chair, I'm covering it all.
Q: "What product ingredients are an instant 'no' for you?"
This one really made me think. I'm not usually for or against certain ingredients, just the quality of the product and if its professional based. The thing with drugstore products is a lot of them will put unnecessary amounts of water in their product to dilute it - making it less expensive to produce. So with that in mind, I guess you could say mass amounts of water are my least favorite.
Q: "How do you afford hair school and how is the entry process?"
Think of cosmetology school like college! Every schools entry is different and requires different things. Some require a whole application, while some just require a brief questionnaire. I always recommend taking a tour of every school and speaking to alumni as well before choosing. You need either a high school diploma or GED to apply, and there's many routes when it comes to funding. You can pull out a student loan, apply for grants/scholarships, or pay monthly. I personally got some grants, scholarships, and pulled out a student loan for the rest! Everyones financial journey is different, so always talk to the schools financial counselor first to see your options.
Q: "Are extensions actually worth it?"
Yes and no! Everyone's hair journey and goals are different, along with how much money they're willing to spend on their hair and how much maintenance they prefer. If you're looking for more length and/or thickness and have the budget and time for it, then extensions are absolutely worth it!
Hair is a luxury service, just like buying a new designer bag - is it worth it? Maybe! It just depends on your goals and finances.
That being said, it also depends on the quality of your extensions. If you're willing to spend more on good quality hair, it will be more worth it as the hair will last a lot longer and withstand a lot more. It's all personal to you! I personally wouldn't consider extensions for myself right now, as I like a low maintenance lifestyle when it comes to my hair.
Q: "I considered doing hair but I'm worried about my income being low. Thoughts?"
This is one of the biggest myths in the hair industry. You CAN make money doing hair - you just need to put in the work to do so. I know many stylists making well over 6 figures in this industry, just being behind the chair! It is possible, despite what's been engraved in our brains. If you're willing to take classes, promote yourself, and do the dirty work at the beginning, you will be successful and make a more than comfortable wage.
That being said, its not overnight. If you think this industry is easy and that you will just sleep in late, and take clients occasionally, and never put in extra time to your education and social media, you're in for a rude awakening. You will more than likely start hourly for the first couple months to a year, and it won't be fun. But learn from your peers, take extra education seriously, and always keep a "better business" mindset. You will start to see the outcome in no time.
Q: "What are your go-to brands?"
LOVE this question. With how oversaturated the product industry is, it's hard to narrow down and try everything. Everyone is releasing products - influencers, celebrities, small businesses, big corporations, etc.
My "safe" brands are Olaplex, Amika, IGK, and Redken. I recommend products from these lines alllllll the time. I feel that these brands have very few products that I dislike, which is something I look for when selecting favorite brands.
Q: "How often should you be washing your hair?"
This is also so personal to you! I always recommend anything besides every day. If you have curly or wavy hair, you could go a lot longer than someone with straight hair. I personally have straighter hair and I trained my hair to go twice a week.
Your scalp needs your natural oils to regulate pH, stay hydrated, help your hair grow, etc. That being said, dry shampoo is my best friend. My all time favorite is the Amika Perk-Up Dry Shampoo. This helps my 3 day hair look brand new.
If you're looking to stretch your hair washes, I recommend pushing it out an extra day each month until you get where you want to be! This is a nice slow way to get your scalp used to less washes and will allow your hair to regulate oil production better.
This was so fun! I can definitely extend on some of these points in other blog posts if you'd like! I have a lot of thoughts on these topics that I would love to share.
